It underscores the importance of enabling people around the world to develop the basic reading and writing skills required to access knowledge and learning, thereby advancing the principles of social justice, equality, and equality of opportunity.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day, observed under the theme ‘Literacy for people, the planet, and prosperity’. It provides an opportunity for institutions, research centres, and policymakers, both regionally and globally, to share perspectives and work together to address the challenges that hinder literacy and limit empowerment through education and access to knowledge, and to explore ways of advancing sustainable social development.

In the UAE, this day provides an opportunity to celebrate the nation's remarkable contributions and pioneering initiatives in promoting literacy. It further highlights the UAE’s longstanding commitment to empowering individuals and communities by enhancing access to learning and knowledge resources, both regionally and globally. These ongoing efforts are guided by the directives of our wise leadership and the belief that addressing illiteracy requires concerted global action.

On this occasion, we at the Supreme Legislation Committee in the Emirate of Dubai reaffirm the importance of ensuring access to educational and knowledge resources, particularly for communities that are most vulnerable to crises. Ensuring such access is vital to narrowing development gaps, fostering stability and prosperity, and building a better future for humanity as a whole.
